For Will Berthiaume, participating in The First Tee Game Changers Academy was nothing short of life-changing. “I want to thank First Tee and First Tee – Connecticut for this incredible opportunity and experience creating memories that will last a lifetime,” Berthiaume expressed, encapsulating his gratitude for the program that significantly impacted his life.
Throughout his time at the Game Changers Academy, Berthiaume was surrounded by inspiring people and thought-provoking seminars. The connections he forged with other teens, including Samuel Carbajal from Fresno, Cal., and Reagan Calaguas from Sacramento, Cal., were particularly meaningful. “Samuel was a great roommate and an amazing friend to work with during the seminars,” Berthiaume recalled fondly. These relationships, coupled with the program’s focus on diversity, inclusion and belonging, allowed him to engage in conversations that can often be challenging for teenagers.
One of the standout experiences for Berthiaume was the seminar led by David Collier, a high school basketball coach. “I liked his seminar the most because he talked about how to set goals in your life and then what steps you should take to achieve those goals,” Berthiaume said. Coach Collier’s insights into setting and achieving both short-term and long-term goals resonated deeply with him. Berthiaume shared his community involvement back home in Meriden, where he participates in the annual Community Trash Cleanup. “It was a real honor to hear all of the participants speak about what positive changes they give to their community.”
Another impactful seminar at TopGolf focused on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I). “What I got out of this seminar is that in order for you to be included in any type of conversation or event, you should not have to change who you are, and you should stay who you are, no matter if you are included or not,” Berthiaume noted. This message of authenticity and acceptance made a lasting impression on him. He also learned the importance of treating everyone with respect and including people from diverse backgrounds in various activities.
Will’s week at Game Changers Academy did not include all seminars and discussions; it also included fun and engaging activities. Berthiaume particularly enjoyed the 18-hole golf scramble at Theodore Wirth Golf Course in St. Paul, Minn. “I made several new friends with kids from across the country,” he shared. “Theodore Wirth Golf Course was in great condition, and I want to thank them for having us out for the 18-hole scramble.”
In reflecting on his experience, Berthiaume concluded, “I made so many memories between great friendships, learning about leadership, how to be a game changer, and how to make a positive impact on my Meriden community.” His experience at the First Tee Game Changers Academy is a testament to the program’s ability to inspire and equip young individuals with the tools they need to make meaningful contributions to their communities.
